Georgioupolis is a well-known resort all over Europe - like Chania city and Apokoronas peninsula, a destination in its own right!
The old name of Georgioupolis was Almiroupoli, named after the Almiros River at the edge of the village. A rare attraction in Georgioupolis - and one most visitors unfortunately will never know - are the wild terrapins in the Almiros River, which are accessible from the beach.
Almiros River, with its massive supply of fresh water, is also one of the reasons for the crystal-clear waters in the magnificent sandy beaches of Georgioupolis. In Georgioupolis beaches you can also go for a sailing, windsurfing, paragliding, or banana boat ride.
Apart from its famous beaches, Georgioupolis offers spectacular views of the White Mountains far behind the village. The village square is a real pleasure to the eye, with old eucalyptus trees surrounding the local taverns and gift shops.
In Georgioupolis you can find a grand selection of taverns, cafes and bars. Don’t miss the local fish taverns. Georgioupolis is renowned for its fresh sea food, which, along with the local traditional dishes, is a surprise to the senses.
Just 4 km inland from Georgioupolis, you can find Crete’s only freshwater lake, Kournas Lake. Being a popular peaceful getaway spot, Kournas Lake is pretty sure a place unlike everything else in Crete.
Georgioupolis is situated 35 km east of Chania city and 20 km west of Rethymnon city. Therefore one can easily visit both cities during his/her stay here. To make things even easier, the village is close to the Chania - Rethymnon main road.
