Almirida is a small seaside village in Souda Bay, 3 km east of Kalives. The scenery is magnificent and the sandy beaches are excellent, so it comes to no surprise that the village has many returning visitors, year after year.
The natural environment is very similar to that in neighbouring Kalives, with plenty of trees, many of which are by the beach.
Very close to Almirida - literally a 10 minute walk - is the village of Plaka. Unlike Almirida, Plaka is situated on top of a hill, overlooking Souda Bay and offering excellent views to both the Cretan Sea and the White Mountains behind. It’s really rare to find two places at such a close proximity, which offer this kind of diverse experience: beach and mountain, swimming and breathtaking view.
Furthermore, both villages are really laid back, allowing for quality time with friends, family, or… yourself!
Historically, the place is of great interest. Many centuries ago, here stood a big colony of the ancient Phoenicians - one of the biggest in the Mediterranean Sea. Today, there is a place named “Finikas” here, as a reminder of the distant past. The place was also a scene of battle between the Greek revolutionaries and the Turks at the end of the 19th century.
